Coronavirus Watch: Rollout speed isn’t the only issue
Slow vaccination rollouts in some economies so far are clearly disappointing from a social and public health perspective, but aren’t automatically a cause for increased pessimism regarding the strength of the economic recovery.
The speed that restrictions can be eased also depends on the degree to which vaccines reduce hospitalisations and deaths. A strong immune response from vaccinations will allow restrictions to be relaxed faster without overwhelming healthcare systems. On this, early signs from Israel continue to be encouraging.
But the timing of when restrictions can be eased also depends on Covid case numbers. Despite the success of Israel’s vaccination programme, restrictions have been extended because cases are still high. In this respect, the spread of more transmissible variants of Covid is a big potential concern.
