The latest published data show that Amsterdam suffered a much more severe recession during the first half of 2020 than the Netherlands as a whole. As a popular tourist destination, and home to one of Europe’s busiest airports (Schiphol), Amsterdam’s economy is estimated to have shrunk by 5.9% in 2020—the largest drop in economic output on record for the city.
