Job Vacancy - Oxford Economics - Senior Research Analyst (London)
In response to the rapid growth in the number of thought leadership research projects, Oxford Economics is seeking a senior research analyst to help take the team’s quantitative analysis to the next level. This is an opportunity to develop and apply the latest software tools and analytical techniques to high quality primary and secondary data sources to further enhance the team’s reputation for rigorous and insightful research into business trends.
The Senior Research Analyst will lead the development of the central research services team, overseeing the production of quantitative data and analysis for thought leadership research programs. The right candidate will have strong survey development, data management and analytical skills, and be proficient in analytical/visualization tools such as PowerBI and Tableau. Project management skills are a prerequisite, as the role will involve managing multiple concurrent research programs and working with editorial colleagues to manage client and supplier relationships. Interest in and awareness of business and technology trends would be a distinct advantage. The candidate will be working with a global team based mostly in our London and New York offices and should be comfortable with flexible working hours.
Research data collection
- Identify suitable, reliable secondary sources to use on research projects. Expand the sources of reliable data that can be accessed for research projects, including Oxford Economics’ proprietary sources, authoritative secondary sources and commercially available sources (e.g. of market sizing data).
- Provide input to survey development, ensuring that surveys comply with Oxford Economics’ survey design best practise guidelines. Further develop these guidelines, to incorporate new question types, checks and balances (e.g. when collecting financial or benchmarking data) and best practices on respondent quotas.
- Work with external survey providers to commission primary research (surveys and in-depth interviews), ensuring clients demographic and other criteria are met. Work with survey providers to ensure they meet Oxford Economics’ service levels at competitive prices.
- Ensure that the research team applies quality control proceses to research data and identifies and rectifies errors before sharing with clients. Ensure the quality and integrity of the analysis, properly citing all sources in line with company policy and copyright laws.
- Overseeing other members of the research team, use Excel and other analytical tools (e.g. Power BI) to analyse survey results, providing cross tabs and filters to highlight trends and insights to Thought Leadership project managers.
- Recommend statistical/analytical techniques to apply to research data, for example cluster analysis or calculation of indices, in response to client demand, or in discussion with the Thought Leadership project manager.
- Collaborate with other teams in Oxford Economics (e.g, the Econometric modelling team) to ensure consistency when working on joint research projects and to encourage the adoption of shared best practises in data analysis.
Presentation of research findings
- Develop innovative ways of presenting complex research findings, telling stories through data, using a variety of formats, (e.g. MS Office, Tableau, Power BI or working with external infographics providers).
- Work with the central research services team to expand its output of interactive visualizations, and their use in different settings (e.g. for clients’ internal use as a training aid, for hosting on their website, for social sharing).
Data and analytical techniques
- Keep abreast of developments in new data sources (e.g. sentiment analysis, web-scraping, job listings data etc.) and potential analytical software tools (e.g. SPSS, Python).
- Oversee the development and documentation of the team’s analysis technologies and techniques
- Propose enhancements in how the Thought Leadership team manages its accumulated data to generate insights (e.g., creation of a data lake, combining survey data with other proprietary or secondary data sources).
- Responsibility, with other members of the central research services team, for ensuring all data related client deliverables (e.g. charts, tables) are well presented and free of errors.
- Contribution to written reports and client presentations as required, e.g., to explain research method
- Working with clients to specify requirements for data vizualisations
Skills and Capabilities
Education and training
- Bachelors degree,
- At least 10 years’ experience of quantitative research and analysis
Previous work experience
- Data management, modelling, data analysis, data visualization
- Contributing to quantitative research projects (e.g, thought leadership, market sizing, market research, statistical agency)
- Client and supplier management
- Staff management and development
- Passion for identifying trends and telling stories with data
- Ability to present complex data visually using alternative presentation tools
- Understanding of global business, economics and social trends
- Knowledge of advanced analytical tools and awareness of latest technical developments
