Economics Editor, Consulting - London

The role

The Economics Editor sits in the Consulting side of Oxford Economics, based in our London office. The Editor’s role is to oversee and improve the accuracy, clarity, and presentation of our key project deliverables across multiple formats—from professionally designed reports and infographics to PowerPoint presentations and short animated videos.

The Editor works closely with senior project managers, economists, and econometricians to ensure their analytical insights are expressed as concisely and compellingly as possible, avoiding technical jargon and bringing key findings instantly to the fore. On more complex and/or high‑profile jobs, the Editor may be included on the project team from the inception stage, having probably already helped to hone the pitch document.

While it is not necessary for the Editor to have a deep understanding of economics, she or he must be adept at editing analytical content to communicate its key messages, and confident enough to challenge the logic of any analysis—without ever misrepresenting the underlying economics.

Naturally, the Editor also works directly with designers, animators, and printers, and is frequently called upon to discuss aspects of the delivery process in meetings with clients. 

On a day-to-day basis, the Editor’s role covers Oxford Economics’ Consulting teams in the UK, US, and Asia, as well as the outputs of our Cities & Regions and Industry teams—from regional and sectoral overviews to one-off commissioned reports.

The Editor is responsible for ensuring a consistent, professional image of these teams’ work by enforcing adherence to Oxford Economics’ style and branding guidelines. She or he is responsible, along with the project manager, for the accuracy and clarity of what is published by these teams, and for delivering projects on time as they were outlined to clients.

Key elements of the role include: 

  • Improving the standard of the teams’ written communications, and helping report authors to improve their drafting skills;
  • Working with project managers to ensure reports are structured to tell the strongest possible story;
  • Carrying out close edits of draft written reports (in Word);
  • Liaising with designers to generate visually powerful designed reports (created in InDesign);
  • Working with project managers and designers to generate still/interactive infographics;
  • Generating the text for animation storyboards, then liaising with animators to create these summary videos;
  • Editing project pitches and presentations as requested;
  • Liaising with Oxford Economics’ marketing department on how best to showcase reports on our website and via social media channels;
  • Managing print processes with external printers (for designed reports).
  • Proactively developing ways to raise the quality of report writing across each team, including by hosting occasional writing workshops.
Skills and experience

This exciting role would suit a strong written communicator who is a rigorous, logical thinker. You should combine an obsessive commitment to accuracy with a passion for turning complex research into engaging narratives. Experience of delivering stylish-looking projects is also highly desirable.


The successful candidate will be someone who has the presence and ability to influence the culture of our growing teams. While it is not essential for the Editor to have a background as a professional economist, you should possess the following attributes.

  • At least eight years’ experience of research and report-writing, or economic or mainstream media journalism;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication;
  • Close attention to detail;
  • An appreciation of economics and social science analysis more generally;
  • Ability to develop an economically coherent narrative from quantitative data, and to explain economic concepts in plain English;
  • Diplomatic but assertive approach with project managers and other economists to ensure the quality of their output;
  • Strong experience using Word, plus experience of PowerPoint and Excel;
  • A strong visual sense and awareness of the importance of design and presentation;
  • Experience of assorted social media platforms;
  • A commitment to going the extra mile to produce rigorous, accurate work, within the constraints of the time and resources available;
  • Ability to prioritise work in order to focus on the most high-profile or externally sensitive reports;
  • Resourceful and proactive approach to dealing with problems and queries.
  • Experience of using quantitative data in research and/or visualisation projects;
  • Experience of working in a client-focused environment, such as consulting;
  • Management experience, particularly in a creative environment;
  • Familiarity with Creative Cloud;
  • Familiarity with Prezi presentation tool.
