Experienced Economist, Economic Consulting - Sydney

The role

We are looking to hire an Economist with about three to five years’ experience to join the economic consulting team at BIS Oxford Economics. The team tackles a wide range of questions raised by our clients, in areas such as transport and infrastructure, the environment, information economics, cultural economics, defence and law enforcement.

This role will be based within the Economic Consulting team. The economist will report to the Head of Applied Economics and will assist in overseeing multiple projects at any one time. Consulting projects usually run for between two and six months, and culminate in a report or presentation to a client.

The successful applicant will assist on most aspects of a client engagement including helping with proposal writing, a degree of project management, analytical work and communicating the results to the client.

They will also be involved in designing and overseeing the development of quantitative models using a variety of analytical tools such as economic impact work, cost-benefit analysis, applied microeconomics and applied econometric analysis.

  • Ensuring robust economic analysis in the delivery of consultancy projects;
  • Economic impact, cost-benefit analysis, survey design and other forms of applied econometric analysis
  • Applying and assuring quantitative analytical techniques as applied to large datasets;
  • Communicating effectively with clients and potential clients;
  • Assisting in the business development and sales of consultancy products and the development of a consultancy sales network;
  • Assisting with the production of research proposals, project reports and presentations;
  • Assisting with project planning and coordinating input from a range of sources; and
  • Some degree of project management and oversight
Skills and experience

This exciting role would suit someone with at least three years’ experience as a professional economist. The successful candidate will be rigorous, adaptable and creative in seeking solutions to difficult economic questions. Candidates should have the following attributes.

  • Three to five years experience as a professional economist;
  • Undergraduate degree in economics (preferably honours);
  • Experience of quantitative economic analysis (or related analysis) and the use of a variety of data sources. Experience in applied microeconomic analysis is preferred;
  • Experience in the, business development and sales of consultancy products and networking within a consultancy environment.
  • Good analytical skills and evidence of being proactive in using economics to answer (external, internal or policymaker) clients questions;
  • A genuine interest in problem solving coupled with the ability to creatively apply traditional and emerging economic methods to a range of contemporary economic and policy issues;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain economic concepts and quantitative results, as well as their implications, to non-specialists; and
  • Good attention to detail.
  • A post-graduate degree in economics or related discipline;
  • Strong knowledge of econometrics/related statistical methods
  • Experience with quantitative analysis software such as R, Stata, Python;
  • Familiarity with a range of analytical techniques as well as knowledge of cost-benefit analysis, CGE modelling and/or input-output analysis;
  • Experience of client-facing work and the ability to develop commercial relationships with potential clients.
